Cardboard Junk Journal Layout

Dear Friends,

Creating  Mixed Media journal pages are something I have started to indulge in of late.
But, my heart gives a leap when I think of using beautiful pattern papers or canvas boards to start with. frequent blog hopping brought to fore Cardboard as substrate. I have a huge collection of cardboard pieces, thanks to the online shopping gala!
These cardboard ended up being a junk journal - a place to experiment my creativity!

The method is the same always. Prepare the page by applying Gesso. Play along with colours - I chose Pink and yellow. Apply texture paste through stencil. Few stamping and embellish it .
A few close up of the pages.

Journal Page "Enjoy"

Layouts are fun to make and there is no dearth of inspirations around . There are a few crafters of my  personal choice whom I follow religiously. One among them is Martha .

Enjoy the Little Things in Life

Someone rightly said "Enjoy the little things in life because one day you would look back and realize they were the big things".  We would have lost many of those "little things" already however, now on, We need enjoy those moments when life gives us !! I have kept this in my mind when making this Journal page - that inspired me to keep the little butterflies which were etched into my mind from my childhood village memories.

In this project, have used images from old magazines, cut into circles and have used water soluble pastels to provide a smudged look to gel into the background.

Materials Used
1. Gelatos® :Faber - Castell
2. Kaisercraft stamps
3. Urban Stamp - Butterflies
4. Gesso
5. Water Colour pencil : Faber - Castell

Earth - A Floral Beauty !

Fellow Crafters !!

Technology is great, Internet is brilliant, Everyone has a train to catch or a place to reach. As part of all this excellent deal, did we miss something ? Did we go missing ?

In this mad rush, we forget to stop and observe things around us. Around you and me there are lot of things to observe, learn and get inspired. Am very fond of flowers and there are no prizes for guessing why Flowers end up as focals to many of my creations.

To start with, was very happy to get "Stampendous Stamp : Hummingbird and Flower" in my hand and had started using it  - did I say I love flowers ?

For this, Stamped "Stampendous : Hummingbird and Flower" onto Cardstock, fussy cut it and coloured it using Water Colour pencil from Faber - Castell. A tip for you - you can cut multiple pieces of them and stick together with a good glue to create an pseudo three dimensional effect - "Paper tole" it is.

I said, Focal is important, so is the background. You can use your ideas to create a background that would ensure that the focal jells into it. In the project, have used images from old magazine cut into circles. Every beautiful thing in nature is a circle ? Including Mother Earth. They were pasted on to thick card stock which is my frequent substrate for journal. Used Water soluble pastels to color this before arranging the focals on to it. One suggestion is to keep the background simple to ensure that the focal always remains in focus and the view is not distracted by a gaudy background.

Materials Used

Happy Crafting

"Discover" Mixed Media Journal Page

Hello Friends ,

Mixed media is one way of expressing what you feel. This time I have created a Mixed media Journal page with the title "Discover" .

Travelling is an inevitable part of our life . Travelling helps us discover who we are and at times helps us enlighten us. Here, I have used one such picture captured during our travel.

Its difficult to jot down "how" to create a Mixed Media Journal. Its like swimming. You need to be in the pool to learn it. However, I would attempt to give you some tips which I learnt through multiple attempts (some successful and some not so successful) I made.

Priming the page with GESSO is a must before you do anything. This gives "tooth" to the mediums to hold on to the substrate.

Next, I applied texture paste / Modelling paste using Prima Sunrise Sunset Stencils - Checker. This gives a third dimension to your 2D attempt.

Lindy's Spray Mist : Caribbean blue is used to create the "wash" apprearence to the background. This is heat dried.

A few checkers were outlined using water color pencils to highlight them. I love the black and blue mix with a tinge of greenery ! Added a few layers of pattern papers to enhance the appearance of the image.

Arranging the embellishments is another art. You should be knowing what to use, where to use and when to use. This again is gained from experience - you may have multiple "not so successful" attempts - however never give up.

Materials Used

  • Deep Red Cling Stamp-Dogwood Flowers
  • Gesso
  • Prima Sunrise Sunset Stencils - Checker
  • Cheery Lynn Designs Fancy flourish
  • Metal Embellishments
  • Lindy's spray : Carribean Blue and Summer lovin sun
  • Watercolour Pencil
